Glossary - Ferrule

Ferrule

To protect the stripped ends of stranded conductors, ferrules are used. Thus, the stranded cables can be connected easily and without damaging the individual wires in the terminals.

Ferrules are available in insulated or uninsulated design. Wire end sleeves with protective collar (colored) also provide additional kink protection for the connected wire. The colored marking of the protective collar simultaneously provides information about the maximum wire or conductor cross-section. There are three different, partly conflicting colors. In the specialist trade, color coding to DIN standard 46228 is increasingly gaining acceptance.

Here is a list of the three different colors:

Cross-section    French color code    German color code    DIN-Norm 46228
0,14 mm²    brown    grey    grey
0,25 mm²    violet    light blue    yellow
0,34 mm²    pink    turquoise    turquoise
0,50 mm²    white    orange    white
0,75 mm²    blue    white    grey
1,00 mm²    red    yellow    red
1,50 mm²    black    red    black
2,50 mm²    grey    blue    blue
4,00 mm²    orange    grey    grey
6,00 mm²    green    black    yellow
10,00 mm²    brown    ivory    red
16,00 mm²    ivory    green    blue
25,00 mm²    black    brown    yellow

Likewise, ferrules have different types of length:

  • N - Normal length
  • K - short version
  • HL - half-length version
  • L - long version

If a slightly thicker cable is to be reduced, since the connection possibility is designed for a thinner cable, one can resort to pin terminals. Pin terminals are thus an alternative to wire end sleeves.
